New ILSAC GF-6A, GF-6B and API SP specifications

Our Product Portfolio (15 products) ready with various API Licenses on the very first license date.

On the 1st of May 2020, the first licensing of new ILSAC passenger car engine oil standards GF-6A and GF-6B, and API’s latest engine oil performance standard, API SP, commenced. The release of these new specifications, to meet the performance needs of current and next-generation gasoline engines including Turbo-charged Gasoline Direct Injection (TGDI) engines, marked the conclusion of a seven-year journey. Products certified under the EOLCS program are authorised to display two marks, the API Service Symbol (aka “Donut”) and the Certification Marks (aka “Starburst” and “Shield”).  The new mark, the API “Shield,” is for GF-6B, SAE 0W-16 viscosity grade oils meeting API SP.

We are pleased to inform you that 15 of our products are licensed by API under the API Service Symbol (aka “Donut”) and the Certification Marks (aka “Starburst” and “Shield”) right on the 1st day, 1st May ’20 of launching the licensing of these new categories.

ILSAC GF-6 has superior performance over ILSAC GF-5 in terms of:

  • Fuel economy and fuel economy retention
  • Engine durability
  • Wear protection for idle-stop
  • Low-speed pre-ignition minimisation

Further details on these new performance categories are as follows:

  • ILSAC GF-6A specification will replace the ILSAC GF-5 specification, represented by the starburst certification trademark, and will provide a new performance level of an engine oil for spark-ignited internal combustion engines.
  • ILSAC GF-6B specification will provide the same performance as GF-6A, but with an additional lower HTHS requirement to deliver further potential fuel economy benefits. It is represented by a new API Certification Mark “Shield”. ILSAC GF-6B will be defined for 0W-16 viscosity grade oils only and is not backward compatible.
